Routine sterilisations – we perform these surgeries on an almost daily basis on cats and dogs and occasionally on rabbits too. Spays are done on female animals and involves removing both ovaries and the uterus (ovariohysterectomy) and castrations are done on male animals and involves removing both testes (orchidectomy). Sterilisation is strongly recommended in all animals from 6 months of age to prevent unwanted pregnancies and undesirable behaviour such as aggression, wandering and urine marking. There are also medical benefits such as preventing mammary and uterine cancers and uterine infections in females and preventing testicular and prostate cancers in males.
